How to Work With Me
I have recently made some changes to the type of nutrition therapy I do.
Please read thoroughly below to see if this is what you are looking for.
The Unburden Program
Gut Health and Detoxification:
My primary area of focus is digestive health and detoxification. These two things go hand in hand.
Your gut is a primary pathway of detoxification of fat-soluble toxic substances, and when it is not functioning optimally, it can contribute to a greater toxic burden in your body.
I have found through my clinical experience that most individuals are suffering from a root cause of some degree (mild to severe) of toxic burden, and its just simply because of the world we live in.
What is toxic burden, you ask?
Great question. All day every day, we’re all being exposed to a number of toxins and toxicants from our environment and food, which is not always something we can control.
Manufacturing, industry, waste processing, and other technological advancements have just created a greater amount of toxicants that build up in our food, skincare products, water supply, and so forth.
Other sources of exposure include water-damaged buildings, improperly stored/handled/prepared food, and pollution in the air, groundwater, and soil.
Some of these include heavy metals, plastic residues, pesticide metabolites, mold-produced mycotoxins, and other endocrine-disruptors.
Here’s an example of what this can look like when we test your body’s exposure to and output of toxic or inflammatory substances:
What this means clinically is that I test for and assess your body’s toxic burden (how much ‘trash’ is it trying to take out regularly, but not quite getting rid of?).
And, then I work with you to reduce exposure where possible, and use nutrition and nutraceuticals where appropriate to increase detoxification in order to help you alleviate the symptoms which are common to an elevated toxic burden, which include, but are not limited to:
- Brain fog
- Sudden memory problems
- Lack of focus/concentration problems
- Multiple chemical sensitivities
- Skin conditions (acne, eczema, psoriasis, etc)
- Autoimmune disorders (thyroid, RA, Lupus, GI autoimmune disorders)
- Intestinal dysbiosis (microbiome imbalance)
- Environmental exposures (such as mold, chemical sensitivities/toxicities)
- Intestinal hyperpermeability (commonly referred to as “leaky gut” on the Internet)
- Candida/yeast overgrowths/imbalances
Why do those symptoms or conditions result from or appear with elevated toxic burden?
As your body works to rid you of normal exposure to toxic things in environment and food, it generally does this efficiently until something overloads its disposal pathways.
Things that overload detoxification and disposal pathways include:
- physiological stress (shock, heat stroke, cancer, severe illness)
- environmental toxic mold (especially in your home or workplace)
- acute exposure to agricultural chemicals
- acute ingestion of heavy metals
- other intense sources of oxidative stress
Once you have an initial trigger or event that causes your body’s immune and waste disposal systems to slow down or back up, it becomes easier and easier for additional toxins or toxicants to build up in an already bogged-down disposal system.
This leads to an elevated total toxic burden, meaning there is more trash to dispose of than there are pathways open or trash trucks available to cart it away.
The good news is once we identify this root of your symptoms, you can avoid certain environmental toxicants or toxins when possible, and then gently re-open those overloaded pathways and aid your body’s natural detoxification processes in off-loading this burden.
This can all be done through dietary interventions, as well as a few key supplemental nutraceuticals, too. Both of those pieces are necessary to complete the healing puzzle, however, and neither diet alone nor supplementation alone will fully heal you.
What About Digestive Disorders?
I also work with patients with the following digestive disorders, which often have some degree of overlap with elevated total toxic burden:
- Celiac disease and wheat-related food sensitivities
- Gluten sensitivity/pre-Celiac
- Diabetes, pre-diabetes, and insulin resistance
- Hypochlorhydria (low stomach acid)
- Digestive enzyme deficiencies
- IBD: Crohn’s disease/Ulcerative colitis
I no longer take on sports nutrition clients who are seeking only nutrition planning or weight loss/gain/maintenance.
If you are looking for that, however, I highly recommend you contact Jay Ashman at KC Nutrition!
For all patients, I obtain lab work and medically-relevant testing to properly determine the scope of your problems, as well as the best course of action for nutritional and lifestyle interventions.
My protocols are thorough and in depth, and require serious commitment.
They focus on healing first and my requirements for compliance are fairly stringent. For that reason, I want to stress to all prospective clients that results take time and not to get discouraged.
You may have been suffering for many years, and it can take months, and sometimes even years, to fully heal from severe inflammatory symptoms.
Expect to make some serious long-term changes. But, also expect some serious long-term results.
